Gary Dempsey started his career as an Apprentice Greenskeeper at Cabramatta Golf Club in 1974 and over the next 44 years built an outstanding career in golf course management. At 24 years of age Gary’s first superintendent position was at Orange Grove Golf Club in Liverpool Sydney. This was a small 9-hole golf course with two staff and limited funding and machinery so it took ingenuity and development of skillsets outside his training to be successful. He then moved on to Cumberland Country Golf Club where he gained valuable experience at a very busy golf course with high membership. It was here where Gary’s talents were being recognised in the industry and in 1989 he was appointed Superintendent at New South Wales Golf Club where he was Superintendent for over 29 years. Gary was widely regarded as being instrumental in the resurrection of this great links. With major works programs in place the golf course soon rose some 25 places in world ranking from 59 to 34 in world rankings. He has been a at the forefront in the development of golf course management and maintenance systems for three decades and has been responsible for many significant changes to the industry. From tournament preparation to major project management Gary’s career has been all encompassing and he has trained more than 200 staff within the industry, many whom carry on his legacy today.
